The “Chinese Dream” is a phrase quite familiar to the world since 2012 when Chinese President Xi Jinping promoted it in a high-profile visit to the National Museum of China and encouraged young people to dare to dream and to work assiduously to fulfill their dreams and contribute to the revitalization of the nation.

However, the similar catchphrase has been heard recently at Theresa May’s party conference where she firstly spoke of the “British Dream” on Wednesday.

In May’s cough-ridden address, the word “dream” appeared a total of 33 times, which had to make netizens, especially Chinese netizens associate it with the “Chinese Dream,” and believe in the impact of China nowadays.

The Guardian, a British daily newspaper cited some Chinese netizens in a story about Theresa May’s “British Dream” speech as saying that the Conservative party leader is “a plagiarist – shameless.”

       梅姨在演讲中直接拿自己的祖母为例并且阐释“英国梦”,确实让我们联想到了“中国梦”中提到的“国家富强、民族振兴、人民幸福”。

Parts of May’s lecture were considered to be lifted directly from Xi’s 515-page tome of speeches, The Governance of China, said The Guardian.

”The historic mission of this party … is to renew [the Dream] in each new generation,” the Prime Minister told delegates at the Manchester Central convention complex on Wednesday. “To renew that dream is my purpose in politics. My reason for being. The thing that drives me on. And it has never wavered through good times and hard times.”

May also set his grandmother as an example to help visualize the “British Dream,” and explained why she put forward the phrase.

“My grandmother was a domestic servant, who worked as a lady’s maid below stairs. She worked hard and made sacrifices because she believed in a better future for her family. And that servant – that lady’s maid – among her grandchildren boasts three professors and a prime minister.” May told and stated that the “British Dream” means each generation should do better than the one before it and each era should be better than the last.

“I believe in the dream that life should be better for the next generation as much as any mother, any father and any grandparent. The only difference is that I have the privileged position of being able to do more than most to bring that dream to life.” May encouraged the country and promised “Conservatism that keeps the British Dream alive for a new generation. That’s what I’m in this for. That’s what we must all be in this for.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping declared in 2012 that everyone has an ideal, ambition and dream and the dream embodies the long-cherished hope of several generations, and emphasized that the “Chinese Dream” is after all the dream of the nationals so it can be only realized by the people.

Deng Yuwen, a Chinese political commentator, said to The Guardian that he had immediately spotted Xi’s motif in May’s Manchester monologue.

“I think she wanted to make the point that as long as you work hard, you can eventually build a dignified life … One layer of the Chinese Dream promoted by Xi Jinping is to improve people’s lives.”
